Format adjustment of film sealers: friction-optimised, compact, modular

drylin SLW lead screw linear modules enable lubrication-free and maintenance-free format adjustment.

This device is used to seal plastic bags. As part of a bag forming, filling and sealing machine, the heat-sealing mould must be able to be quickly and easily adapted to different bag widths. Today, format adjustment is ensured with the help of linear guide systems from the drylin SLW series, which are very user-friendly due to their completely lubrication-free and maintenance-free components.

Profile

  • What was needed: drylin SLW lead screw linear modules and drylin W double rails with housing bearings
  • Requirements: For the format adjustment of the welding unit, components with low friction coefficients were sought that could be integrated modularly, were lightweight, maintenance-free and cost-effective.
  • Industry: Packaging technology, bag packaging machines
  • Success for the customer: The comprehensive drylin modular system offers modular products that can be configured for any application. They are lubrication-free and maintenance-free, optimised in terms of weight and friction coefficient and reliable in operation.

Problem

Machinery Development Services Ltd (MDS) was responsible for the design of this film sealing unit. In the bag packaging machine, it performs the task of closing the packs at high speed. A particular challenge always arises when the width of the bag to be sealed changes. In order to be able to adjust to the different formats as flexibly as possible, linear bearing components had to be found for the film sealer that not only enable simple format adjustment, but also achieve low coefficients of friction, can be quickly and easily integrated into the existing machine, are lightweight and maintenance-free and at the same time are as cost-effective as possible.

Solution

For the format adjustment, the designers therefore opted for an adjustment mechanism consisting of various components from the drylin modular linear system. Specifically, four lead screw linear modules of type drylin-SLW (SLW-1080) are used here. The lubrication-free and flexible linear modules are particularly suitable for manual format adjustment as well as for electric adjustment with a motor.
The lead screw linear modules are supplemented by several drylin W double rails (double rail WS), on which drylin W pillow blocks (WJ200UM01) run.
The modular systems can be customised to the needs of the system operator. They are completely lubrication-free and maintenance-free, optimised in terms of weight and friction coefficient and reliable in operation.
