Robust energy chains for high-speed camera carriages

The company Rail & Tracking Systems builds camera movement systems for indoor and outdoor use. A product highlight is the Trackrunner series: these are camera carriages for fast movements that are used particularly in sports competitions, but also in many other event areas such as concerts, fashion shows or TV shows. When recording HD TV, it is necessary to connect the camera and broadcast vans with fibre optic cables. During the camera movement , speeds of up to 14m/s with short acceleration times occur. In order to ensure the greatest possible reliability, the cable guidance system must be able to cope with long travels, cornering, rain, UV radiation and temperatures over 45°C. The solution: Our E6 series energy chains that are as light as they are durable.

The application received the silver vector award from igus in 2008.

On a 130-metre straight track in high temperatures

The Trackrunner used at the Olympic Games in Beijing: The camera had to travel a distance of up to 130 metres in both directions at high acceleration - in direct sunlight and at an ambient temperature of around 45°C. The energy chain must meet these requirements to ensure trouble-free operation:

90-metre cornering at high acceleration

In use on the outer edge of the racetrack in the stadium: The camera races here in a 55 metre radius over a distance of 90 metres. It accelerates to a speed of 14m/s within 2 seconds. The energy chain must be able to bend in both directions here:

340° ride around the show stage

With this carriage system, the camera moves 340° in a radius of 5.6 metres almost completely in a circle around the stage. The speed here is 5m/s. When moving back, the energy chain must return exactly to its original position:
