About the application:

The company feinarbyte is developing an automated drum test that uses a drylin® room linear robot. The robot can do what a person cannot: during a drum test, it is important that a cymbal be struck with uniform force at defined spots. This is the only way to achieve comparable stop angles and comparable sound recordings.

The problem

Musikhaus Thomann, a German retailer of musical instruments, offers a web application that compares drum cymbals and their tone.
Precise comparison absolutely requires that exactly the same defined points on the cymbal be struck with exactly the same force. An automatic recording of the tone is made for each strike. Only accurately repeated force and striking position allow an accurate comparison of test results.
The number of different cymbals, striking positions and striking strengths multiply, requiring an incredible amount of recording effort. Moreover, even experience drummers struggle to perform tests that require exact repetitions. A programmed robot system could be the solution here. However, these are often cost-intensive and require programming skills.

The solution:

The solution is a drylin® room linear robot system. The low-cost robotics system is not only cost-effective, but also suited to non-programmers; it offers a simple introduction to automation for a wide variety of industries.
For instance, the robot can be flexibly adapted and easily reprogrammed for such applications as different striking positions and strengths for different cymbals. This allows Thomann's online drum tests to be performed reliably. The robot system's low costs mean that there are two ways in which the system pays off. It can be assumed that customers are more willing to purchase musical instruments online if they have the opportunity to test and compare products. This simplifies drum purchase from the online shop and minimises product returns.
