Wear-resistant 3D printing polymers

The best materials for moving applications

3D printing materials
Our 3D printing materials are up to 50 times more abrasion-resistant than conventional plastics. This makes them the ideal material wherever components come into contact through movement. On this page you can find out which materials fulfil special requirements, such as food conformity or ESD suitability.

In our shop you will find detailed technical information and processing instructions for all of our 3D printing materials. For easy processing of our filaments on the conventional 3D printers from Bambu Lab, Prusa and Ultimaker, you can also download some material profiles.▶️ To the material shop

What do the iglidur plastics have in common?
All iglidur materials contain the same basic materials specifically developed for plain bearings. This means that they are all self-lubricating and wear-resistant thanks to integrated solid lubricants. You can find more details on the specifications of the iglidur basic materials in the Plain Bearing Wiki.

On this page you will find more information about the specifications of our materials:

All-rounder materials

The iglidur 3D printing materials are considered all-rounders that can be used for any type of wear application under normal conditions.

The bestsellers are the SLS powder iglidur i3 and the tribofilament iglidur i150. If, however, your application requires an all-rounder material with significantly higher flexural strength and/or temperature resistance, iglidur i230 is the right material.

Heat-resistant materials

This category includes 3D printing materials that can withstand a permanent application temperature of at least 120°C (without deforming): for such high application temperatures, we offer wear-resistant tribofilaments and SLS powders.

What do you need to bear in mind when processing heat-resistant tribofilaments?
  • To process high-temperature filaments, you need a 3D printer with an installation space temperature of at least 160°C
  • It is especially important to store the high-temperature filaments so that they are protected from moisture and to dry them before they are used so that no quality problems arise.

Materials that are suitable for ESD

Our electrostatically dissipative materials are ideal for applications where ESD specifications are essential for avoiding damage to electronic components and manufacturing anti-static parts for machines that require ATEX certification.
New product: iglidur® i9-ESD has a lower conductivity than iglidur i8-ESD, which prevents unwanted discharge currents between sensitive electrical components. This makes it particularly suitable for electronic connectors.

In addition to its antistatic specifications, iglidur i8-ESD and i9-ESD are also characterised by their outstanding rigidity, as a result of which the parts are deformed to a lesser degree than other materials under the same load. Like all other igus 3D printing materials, ESD SLS powders contain solid lubricants, which ensure especially low friction and make additional lubrication unnecessary.

Chemical-resistant materials

With iglidur i10, a chemical-resistant laser sintering material was developed that is characterised by high ductility and low moisture absorption. An ideal material for weight-saving functional components with elastic specifications, especially for applications in the electroplating industry. Due to the food conformity, iglidur i10 is also suitable for applications in the packaging or food industry.

You can find the chemical resistance for individual materials under "Technical data" in the material shop or under "More information" for the material in question in the 3D printing service tool.
The plastics are each checked for resistance to the chemicals in question. Mixtures are not taken into account. All information is based on room temperature. Plastic resistance is divided into resistance (+), limited resistance (0) and no resistance (-).

What does resistance mean?

  • No significant mechanical property changes
  • No colour or surface change
  • Weight increase <3% or weight loss <0.5% possible
  • Change of compression force at break <15% possible
  • Change of Shore D hardness <2 possible
According to our experience, no damage is caused by the medium.

What does limited resistance mean?

  • Significant material weight and property changes
  • Minor colour and surface change possible
  • Weight gain of 3-8% or loss of 0.5-3% possible
  • 15% to 25% change of compression force at break possible
  • Change of Shore D hardness 2 to 5 possible
We therefore recommend a practical test under the relevant conditions.

Food-safe materials

Our 3D printing materials also include some with food conformity for safe use in the food and packaging industry. Food conformity guarantees that materials that come into contact with food have been tested for the degree of transferred plastic components. EU Regulation 10/2011 and the FDA in the USA define limit values, above which the material is no longer food-safe. The permissible contact time also plays a role and varies depending on the FDA or EU 10/2011 declaration of conformity and ambient temperature.

Tips for 3D printing with food-safe tribofilaments:
  • Protect food-compliant filament from dust
  • Thoroughly clean all contact parts before printing, especially the extruder pinion, print nozzle and print bed
  • Use no adhesive or one that conforms with food standards
  • Select slicing software settings for a dense surface
  • Reduced printing speed and adaptation of the line width to the nozzle diameter
